Introduction to Manga

Manga are comics or graphic novels that originated from Japan. It encompasses a wide array of genres like action, adventure, romance and horror. Manga is read by people of all ages and is highly popular not only in Japan but around the world. It has been translated to many different languages and has produced other similar kinds like the Manhua of Taiwan and the Manhwa of South Korea.

A Mangaka or Manga creator is considered a legitimate job and many Japanese have become highly successful in this line of work. If a Manga is highly popular, it can also be adapted to an Anime, which is another popular Japanese product, or a live action Movie or TV series with real actors and movie sets.

Anyone who wants to try reading Manga for the first time is faced with lots of choices and it can be a little overwhelming. It’s like opening a door and entering a large room with endless shelves of Manga titles. While this is considered true in the past, the presence of the internet has produced countless guides and lists for the first time reader and it has made choosing a Manga to read a relatively easy task.

This is one such list. However, this is not based on popularity, rating or sales. These titles are random personal favorites which is a must read for any Manga fan.

1. Kingdom by Yasuhisa Hara. This is a retelling of the warring states period in China with an orphan boy as its main protagonist.
2. One Piece by Eichiro Oda. This is a fantasy pirate adventure story which is the highest selling Manga series of all time.
3. Uchuu Kyoudai by Chuya Koyama. The story of two brothers who dreamed of becoming astronauts when they saw a UFO one night.
4. Piano no Mori by Makoto Isshiki. A tale of a boy from a red light district, a former piano prodigy and how they are connected by a piano in a forest.
5. 7 Seeds by Yumi Tamura. Set in a post apocalyptic future, it follows five groups of young adults tasked with the restoration of the world.
